Insulating Steel Laminations

Insulating Steel Laminations

Insulating Steel Laminations

(OP)
I've got some steel lamintaion strips that are used in a guitar pickup to cut down on eddy currents when transfering magnetic flux from the magnets to the pole pieces. They're about .027 thick and stacked about 8 high. I've been insulating them with varnish and it's a little too labor intensive. Is it possible to get an oxide coating on them from an annealing/heat process that won't warp them? Can any heat treating company do this? Is there a spec of some sort?

RE: Insulating Steel Laminations

Are they transformer steel (Si steel, grain oriented, coated)?
I sort of doubt it.  The coatings on these are designed to form an insulation when annealed.
Your material also sounds a little thick.

Corrosion, every where, all the time.
Manage it or it will manage you.

RE: Insulating Steel Laminations

bassnut--If you are manufacturing these devices, rather than the application being a "one-off" you might consider the molded plastic/iron powder based materials such as "Fluxtrol". These materials are intended as an alternative to laminations and can be molded into a configuration to suit your application.
