For you guys that moved from AutoCAD to SolidWorks, has anyone used AutoCAD for architecural or building/office layout and moved that data for use into SolidWorks? Or is there a program that you use for doing this type of work in SolidWorks? I am trying to find a way to do office layout in SolidWorks and also translate that data to architects using AutoCAD. We are doing a layout of the building. I do not want to use DXF or DWGEditor. I want full control withing SolidWorks if possible.
thanks

RE: SolidWorks archetectural

Chris,

Sounds easy enough.  You will need to model your floor plan in SW and create the drawings in SW.  Then save the SW drawing file as a DWG so your architect can open the file with AutoCAD.  I have done some basic architectural work in SW.  3D is so nice for seeing space relationships.  I have used SW many times to model a building and then translate the exterior elevations back to AutoCAD.  It works well.  SW does not work well for adding all the details required in production architectural drawings though.  I would still do this work in AutoCAD.

Chris,

Do they NEED, the hard data, or are they going to take your layouts, and input them into thier software anyway? If that is they case, why not just give them an e-drawing.

RE: SolidWorks archetectural

Chris,

Last year I gutted my kitchen for a total remodel.  I did the cabinet design, and lighting in SWx.  It was mainly for my own gratification and visualization.  Although, it did help us when we manufactured the cabinets.  I submitted a 2D layout to the contractor who was trenching my foundation for the island.

I guess what I'm looking for is:
In AutoCAD there are blocks with all the symbols needed for office layout and LISP programs for automating the task which also creates BOM's, cost, etc.
I want to send the dwg files back with the symbols, but not have it affect the compatibility with their symbol library.

They do not want edrawings, it is too far into the future for them. :)

Rob, thanks. I'm going to import what I have from ACAD to SW, change it, then send back and see what happens.

...wish it were ALL SW!

RE: SolidWorks archetectural

Chris.   I believe its possible to convert ACAD blocks into SW drawing blocks?? You might be able to "steal" their ACAD blocks and covert them for use in SW.  When you save the SW drawing to DWG ACAD may regonize them as a block.  I think there is something in the help file about blocks and how they import and save.
