The lights go out in Los Angeles

Is there anyone on Eng-tips who knows the real story of what caused the blackout in LA?

I tend to take what I read in the media with a grain of salt, and while I know I will probably read about it in the next issues of Power Generation Industry publications, I thought someone here might know the real story.

Were all the good workers away cleaning up from Katrina?

RE: The lights go out in Los Angeles

I too would love to hear the real story. The TV reports I heard were even worse than this one. They said workers cut the wrong cables and hooked them back up to the wrong places. Everyone in the room looked to me to explain that, and I just had to shrug my shoulders. I found it a little hard to swallow, linesmen (at least living ones) don't cut live power cables! This story seems to indicate it was in a control system which makes a lot more sense. That also explains how they wereable to get back on-line so quickly.

RE: The lights go out in Los Angeles

You sure illuminating is the right word?

RE: The lights go out in Los Angeles

LOL, completely unintentional. Good catch.

RE: The lights go out in Los Angeles

Heh, I like that.

Plan the project.

Do the engineering work.

Check the engineering work.

DOUBLE check the engineering work because you never know when the idiotic losers who get hired at the cheapest rate they can get away with are going to be so stupid that they can't actually read your explicitly clear drawings and figure out not to cut THE ENTIRE CABLE.

Take the blame when even that didn't prevent the inevitable screw up.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt and the hat.

We have broad shoulders.  We're the goats when things go wrong and are ignored when things go right.  Ahhhh...but you all know that feeling......
