Editing toolbox descriptions

Editing toolbox descriptions

Editing toolbox descriptions

(OP)
Morning all,

I've added a few parts to the toolbox using 'add my parts' wizard, but now wish to alter the path under which the parts are stored.

I.e At present the parts are stored as the path:

Standard parts / Nuts / Misc

In the toolbox. If I wish to edit the name 'nuts' to something else, is there any way I can do this without altering the SWBrowser.mdb file?

I have looked in the toolbox browser configuration option, and also tried editing standard information, but there doesnt seem to be the option to 'rename' anywhere?!!

Have I missed something obvious, or do I have to just delete the entries and add them all over?

RE: Editing toolbox descriptions

If you edit the SWBrowser.mdb file and you mess it up, SW will not support you. You must not edit that file without understanding the problems that may occur.

YOu will have to simply remove the file from that location and re-add the file to your Toolbox "Add my parts wizard"

If I remove the files from that location (i.e the path that I dont want) and re-add them, will the old location remove itself though? I.e I dont want redundant (and empty) locations hanging around in the toolbox.

All I want to do is edit the location name, I cant believe that this cant be done through solidworks itself? You can create them, so it makes no sense that they cant be edited...

RE: Editing toolbox descriptions

Remove the path through windows explorer.

I have never seen away to remove the file and the path through SW or Toolbox.

It isnt actually a file path though, it is a path created within the SWBrowser.mdb? I just want to alter the names that are in the database, but it seems I cannot without having to use access.

Tools -> options -> data options -> edit standards data

allows you to do certain things, but you cant rename anything, only delete (Even your own entries).

Looks like the only way to edit it is to delete the entries, and add all my parts again...

RE: Editing toolbox descriptions

benman,
Did you created these parts from scratch and added it though the "add my parts"? Are they linked to toolbox parts?

This is what I did when I did my own parts.

Here's your out of the box toolbox folder and hopefully it's located on the network:

Browser
CopiedParts
lang
PartLibs

Here's the modified folder with an extra folder with your parts.

Browser
CopiedParts
lang
PartLibs
STANDARD PARTS [your parts]

This way your parts are separated from toolbox but pointed to the same network drive. You might want to make a copy of this when you load new verions of SW and re copy it to the folder.

As the other guys say don't mess with the native toolbox parts or the access database files.

RE: Editing toolbox descriptions

I think there is some confusion here as to what I want to alter. When you add a part to toolbox using 'add my parts' wizard, you specify a top level group, then a second level, and so on...

All I want to do is alter the name of one of the groups that I have created. This seems impossible to do through solidworks, without deleting the group and starting over?

RE: Editing toolbox descriptions

That's what you have too do benman.

That's what I have been trying to tell you.

RE: Editing toolbox descriptions

Okay dokey. Seems a bit of a poor thing to have to do though. What if I had 50 toolbox parts that I decided to rearrange into new groups?!! I dont see why they cant make editing / rearranging toolbox structure easier - I thought I must have been missing something obvious. It seems not...

Has this improved in 2006?

RE: Editing toolbox descriptions

Nope! - it's been like this for many years.

If you ever move your TB DB, to a new location you will have too insert all your custom added parts as well.
