Torque limit

Torque limit

Torque limit

(OP)
Hi,

We have actually installed one 900 k W motor driving two rollers through  one main gearbox. We are having gear damage on one of the roller , because at a particular instant it is possible that the maximum available torque at the output shaft of the gearbox could be applied to one of the roller.
The ideal solution would be to have to drives running the rollers independently but it is too expensive for us for the time being.
I am looking for a sort of torque limiting device , which could be attached to one of th roller , so that we could stop the motor if the applied torque on one of the roller exceeds a particular limt.
Grateful to have inputs from forum members.

Bob

RE: Torque limit

Hi maypot

We could do with more information like rollers diameters
and application, plus what is the maximum torque?
That said it sounds like you need to fit a ball indent device on your roller so that when the torque limit is exceeded your roller just free wheels.

RE: Torque limit

An inexpensive torque limiter is a shear pin hub.  I think Martin has them up to around 500,000 in-lb.  If you need something larger they are easy to make and have a small foot print.  If you don’t have a shop to make one someone like IDC or Falk could make one for a reasonable price.

Of course every time it shears a pin you have to align the holes and put in a new pin.  You can get some big friction torque limiters but the have a larger footprint and will require more money.
