At my federal agency we have a 12.47kV overhead line that is strung using individual insulators on each utility wooden pole.  The poles are spaced at approx. 150' from each other and is about 2 miles long.  On each run between cables large insulating balls were installed to avoid phase contact during high wind situations.  This has not worked entirely because some balls have become water laden during winter and the water has frozen. The added weight has increased the cable sag and high winds have caused some phases to wrap around and cause faults.

Two solution methods have been suggested. Namely, remove the balls and use cross arms at each pole to separate the phases or use remove the balls and use phase to phases insulated spacers to keep the lines from coming into contact with each other.

The preferred method would be the spacers, but we cannot located any supplier or manufacturer.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Can you drill a bunch of holes in the balls so they don't fill with water?  Or are you talking about water freezing on the outside?

Thanks for your reply, but the insulating balls do have holes and the water did freeze inside one of the balls causing the scenario described above.  Our preference at this time is to install insulated spacers.

If you know any sources please let me know.

You could simply install a 25kV polimeric insulator between the lines. They would work well for your situation.

K-Line probably has the interphase spacer that will meet your need.

Am not sure, but I thought that those orange balls were to signify line locations in the proximity of helicopter landing areas.
