individual wastewater treatment

most typically we install gravelless drainfield to treat individual homes.  this home inparticular can not support a drain field...the soil is clay and will not allow permeation.  an individual lagoon is very expensive...what other alternatives are there to avoid high cost and effectively treat this home?

RE: individual wastewater treatment

You can install an above ground septic system.  There are lots of those in areas with that kind of ground or in areas where the ground water level is near to ground level.  We seen a lot of those here in the Midwest, particularly in Central Wisconsin.

Subsurface drip !!

I don't like mounds, they leak, require alot of fill material to be hauled to the site.  etc.

> septic tank > aerobic Treatment Unit> Pump tank> then dispose using subsurface drip irrigation.

Drip is installed about six inches in the ground.  It is spaced about 2' on center with emitters spaced two foot on center.  The emitters flow rates can vary depending on the application.  The tubing is set up in zones that are dosed with a computerized timer.

I've designed dozen of these sytems and they are the ticket for difficult soils.

Hope this helps!

RE: individual wastewater treatment

I agree about the "mounds".  An above ground tank which is frequently pumped is ideal.  See: www.watertanks.com/category/108/

or do a Google search for "above ground septic systems".

RE: individual wastewater treatment

Do a search on this site for "above ground septic systems" or individual septic systems.

RE: individual wastewater treatment

Aerobic system that discharges drinkable water.  Depending on where you are and the local codes, these claim they can surface discharge.

RE: individual wastewater treatment

Try a publication titled "Recommended Standards for Individual Sewage Systems", available from Health Education Services, Inc. in Albany, New York (www.hes.org).  It was printed in 1980, but is still available and has useful design information.

RE: individual wastewater treatment

An aerobic treatment system is a good alternative, with discharge being used for irrigation, if the water meets the regs it's even a good way to save water.

Great suggestions.  For more, try posting to "Waste Disposal and Treatment" forum.

National Small Flows Clearinghouse has some good refs.

Mound systems have some limitations
Sand filters (open and buried) option depending on variety of constraints

Good luck

RE: individual wastewater treatment

Culligan makes 'duplox' systems which can treat 12-24m3 of WW /day depending on the model (general range 20 - 200 residents). cost may be an issue, i think that the smallest one can cost aprox 25.000$.

depending on the size of your home and your neighbours, this may be a solution

this helps - thank you for the discussion!

Have you considered wetlands or Willow plantations.  If your area requires heating the willow plants can be used for fuel in certain circumstances.

RE: individual wastewater treatment

Consider a non-biological system - no drain field, mound, leachbed, etc. makes water as clean as rain and goes goes with rainwater - like to a footer drain.

Power consumption is proportional to sewage flow. EPA says DESIGN FOR 100 GAL / PERSON / DAY AND THAT'S FINE BUT AVERAGE WATER CONSUMPTION IN N. AMER. IS ABOUT 37.5 GAL / PERSON /  DAY. SO, YOU MAY ONLY PROCESS ABOUT 100 - 150 GAL / DAY. POWER  AND OTHER OPERATING COSTS ARE ESTIMATED AT $60. / MO. THIS COMPARES FAVORABLY WITH SEWER BILLS IN MANY AREAS.
