FLARE HEADER INSPECTION OPENINGS

FLARE HEADER INSPECTION OPENINGS

FLARE HEADER INSPECTION OPENINGS

(OP)
Hello,

Are inspection openings needed in long (over 100 meter) flare headers (24" diameter)? if positive, for what purpose? is it mentioned in some standards like API?

regards,
          roker

RE: FLARE HEADER INSPECTION OPENINGS

I think it is better to have openings (Manways) for inspection after construction activities.
You might not need openings if you can do air blowing of such long pipe that will ensure it is clean after construction.

Cheers

RE: FLARE HEADER INSPECTION OPENINGS

I understand that there is no specific standard for internal inspection of flare header.

-Is this flare for hydrocarbon service?
-Do you have sludge problem in the line?

RE: FLARE HEADER INSPECTION OPENINGS

Why would anyone want to inspect a flare header! I have never seen manholes on pipes! You barely can enter it. Maybe a very short, skinny, small person can enter it!

I think if a "flare header", or any other piece of pipe for that matter, is cunstructed and commissioned according to the standards, then we are ok.

RE: FLARE HEADER INSPECTION OPENINGS

you be suprised how much polymer can accumulate in a flare header

RE: FLARE HEADER INSPECTION OPENINGS

Requirements for inspection oepnings depends entirely on your chemistry. If there is a reason why  buildup can occur in the flare header then inspection openings are required.

Try API 560

RE: FLARE HEADER INSPECTION OPENINGS

any entry to pressurized equipment is a decision between the principal and the designer (architect/engineer).
there are NO MANDATORY requirements to have manholes to enter pressure vessels, pipelines...
nevertheless the construction codes give rules to design and build them because they are a fact of life... things need to be inspected and maintained.

some pressure vessels are built with no provisions for entry at all.

in the case of small diameter piping, e.g. 6" or 8"... there is no way to install a manhole... inspection is accomplished thru borescoping, UT, pressure test, etc.

i do not recall the rules for API tanks... vaguely remember that there are specifications about how to design the manhole... but cannot confirm they are a requirement.

saludos.
