calculation of spur gear life

(OP)
I'm looking for a SIMPLE method for calculating the theoretical life of some large spur gears designed to BS 436 part 1 1967 class B. The spur gears have been installed since the mid seventies. I'm hoping that some sort of simplified formula exists into which I can feed such variables as power transmitted, gear dimensions, gear class, duty and hardness, and get a figure for the maximum recommended number of cycles. Am I tilting at windmills or does such a formula exist?
