Platforms 1 & 2 or Platform 1 & 2

Platforms 1 & 2 or Platform 1 & 2

Platforms 1 & 2 or Platform 1 & 2

(OP)
I have a question about whether the "s" is necessary in this sentence:

This inspection cover Platform(s) 1 & 2 of XXX Station amd what happens if the word "Platform" changes to "Platform"

RE: Platforms 1 & 2 or Platform 1 & 2

I would write it as 'This inspection covers Platforms 1 and 2 of XXX Station'.

RE: Platforms 1 & 2 or Platform 1 & 2

If the nown refers to more than one, use plural:

In "Platforms 1 and 2", the word platforms is referring to two separate items, and so it should be plural.

In "platform 1 and platform 2" each is singular.

Either "platforms 1 and 2", "platforms 1 & 2" and "platform 1 and platform 2" are correct.  But "platform 1 & 2" is incorrect.

RE: Platforms 1 & 2 or Platform 1 & 2

I can see where "platform 1 & 2" could be correct in at least one context.  If you have a train station, and there is one platform that serves track 1 on the one side and track 2 on the other side, then "platform 1 & 2", I think, is quite reasonable, because there is only one platform.

One more thing about the original sentence--it should be "This inspection covers ..."

I mean, as long as they're asking for grammatical advice...

CajunCenturion,

Do you refer to the island platform which served two tracks?

RE: Platforms 1 & 2 or Platform 1 & 2

I suppose that it could be an island, but the key point is that in that scenario, there is only one platform.  Platform is singular.

Without knowing the specific context of the inspection, it is difficult to know whether platform should be singular or plural.

RE: Platforms 1 & 2 or Platform 1 & 2

I can see your point CajunCenturion, but personally I would still think of it as 2 platforms, even though they are joined together.  Otherwise, just platform 1 would have to be semi-platform 1!

At several major stations in the UK, they do sometimes have a Platform 1a and 1b where different trains go from the front and back end of the same Platform (On the same track).  Even then I have heard an announcement of a train leaving from Platforms 1a and 1b.

Back to the basic definition/meaning of the word “Platform”, does the word “Platform” refer to the whole structure which comprises, for an island platform, the front walls and the slab on which passengers stand or just to the nosing (the short cantilever bit)?
