Mimimum Bend Radius as function of wire dia., temper, alloy

Mimimum Bend Radius as function of wire dia., temper, alloy

(OP)
I am looking for information regarding the minimum bending radius of stainless steel wire.  For a given wire diameter, temper and alloy, bending the wire to a radius smaller than a certain threshold will significantly compromise the tensile strength of the wire.  Anybody know 'rules of thumb' or can point me to some data?  Appreciate any information at all.
Specific example: minimum bend radius for
0.008" diameter, full hard temper, 304 stainless.

RE: Mimimum Bend Radius as function of wire dia., temper, alloy

Wire specs are written to require the wire to wind on itself without breaking. With .008" wire, this means the wire must be capable of winding on an arbor .008" in diameter. You do the math from there. Take a look at ASTM A313, which is the spec for stainless spring wire. With the temper of material you have described, you basically have spring wire.Forming will increase the tensile and yield strength of the wire and decrease the ductility. The only damage you can do is if you crack the wire. Cracking can occur on the outside of the bend or on the inside of the bend, the latter being due to "springback". It is important to stress the component as soon as possisble after bending. Stress relief temperature for 302/304 spring wire is 450-950F.
