Underground storage

I am trying to design an underground storage are for water detention.  It will be connected to a dry detention basin that uses a discharge structure.  How do I go about calculating the area of void space within a trench?

RE: Underground storage

Clean Stone d50=1.5"-2.5" is commonly considered to be 40% void space.

Volume = L x W x depth x .4

Remember: The Chinese ideogram for “crisis” is comprised of the characters for “danger” and “opportunity.”

Is there a specific compaction that should be specified?
