Underground gas storage

Underground gas storage

Underground gas storage

(OP)
Hi,
Probably I put here a stupid question but does anyone know something about "Underground gas storage", some standards or documentation. In DOE published materials I found a lot of interesting things, but none about a screening for suitable reservoirs, and all the basics of this subject.

Best regards,
Andrei

RE: Underground gas storage

Since you are requesting screening rather than general design documents, I would suggest both the American Gas Association (www.aga.org) and the American Petroleum Institute (www.api.org).  Both organizations produce ANSI recognized standards that address your issue and both have online catalogs to help you determine which standards you may need. The libraries are fairly extensive and, depending on the subject, expensive.

RE: Underground gas storage

I don't remember which is for aboveground and which for underground.  But most storage tanks for gas service that are commonly installed, (NOT MANUFACTURED TO API) are manufactured and initially installed IAW Underwriters Laboratory Standards UL-142 or UL-58.

RE: Underground gas storage

I read the question as related to salt domes, salt layers excavated caverns, etc. for natural gas or gas products.  Note the phrase "screening for suitable reservoirs".  I suspect that the context is reclaiming used petroleum reservoirs for the purpose of storing natural gas.  Several companies such as Parsons Brinkerhoff (PB-KBB) specialize in this area of the business.

RE: Underground gas storage

ledon...

I believe your reference to UL tanks may be misleading

UL142 is a steel tank design standard for storage of liquid petroleum products (commonly diesel or fuel oil)at atrmospheric pressure.

UL58 is the underground equvalent

Neither of these standards are suitable for storage of gaseous products or of any product under pressure.

Storage of pressurized liquids and gasses (above 15 psig)are governed by the design rules of codes such as ASME VIII and BS 5500.

hope that this helps....

Hi,
The UGS in discusion is the technology that use the depleted oil & gas (NATURAL)reservoirs for gas injection during the summer and produce them in winter to cover the peaks of consumption.
Some free materials will help me(the standards you are talking about are too expensive for me).
A.

Best regards,
Andrei
