PDMWorks - copying files from Vault to Vault?

PDMWorks - copying files from Vault to Vault?

PDMWorks - copying files from Vault to Vault?

(OP)
I've been working in a temporary Vault on my C:\ drive while running a pilot PDMW scheme.  The time has come to install a permanent Vault on the server but I've got a couple of projects which need to be transferred over and don't want to screw up any file references or anything.

Any suggestions as to the best method to make the transition?

Thanks for any help

Simon

RE: PDMWorks - copying files from Vault to Vault?

After having PDMW setup with the correct revision schemes and lifecycles, start from the final assy dwg and check it in...check the box to include all associated dwgs for all parts/assys.
Take your time and make sure everything is checked in.
If you are not sure about some of it, read help and do a search here...a lot of discussions about PDMW.

Thanks for the reply.

If I check everything into the new vault won't all the revision information be lost?  I could go through it all and bump revision of everything I guess, but it will take ages.  Could I simply copy the project directory from Vault to Vault?

Cheers,

OH, I see. You have PDMW vault setup already on your PC?
Transfer the vault to the new place. Make a backup first. Then re-link PDMW to the new place.

RE: PDMWorks - copying files from Vault to Vault?

ctopher is right.  We have re-linked PDMW to different servers on several occasions, and we have never had a problem.  Just make sure you delete the "sample" folder after you're done (unless, of course, you want it there).

RE: PDMWorks - copying files from Vault to Vault?

Hi, We've done this a couple of times. Install PDMWorks to the server, then stop the PDMWorks services on both your local vault and server vault. You can then delete your server vault and copy your local vault to the server. Then restart the service. I would definitely use the rebuild tree options.

RE: PDMWorks - copying files from Vault to Vault?

I think what Simon205 is asking is if he can move one of his projects within his PDMWorks vault on his local machine to a Vault running on another machine.  Correct me if I am wrong Simon205.  Some suggested bulk load, but this would not catch all the revisions that Simon205 wants.  Some suggested wholesale transfer of the test vault on Simon205's local machine to the other PDMWorks vault computer, but what if there are discrepancies with Simon's local vault that he doesn't want to transfer to the other vault?  What if the "production vault has had valid changes that have not been made to Simon205's vault b/c that is not a valid live version and only used for testing?  I think (I may be wrong) that Simon205 is really looking for a way to replicate certain projects with complete revision history to another vault, with intentions of carrying forward from that point on with the live version of the vault.  The only way I know of to do this would be to manually reconstruct the history through the check-in process - not very fun.  This sounds like an enhancement request.

RE: PDMWorks - copying files from Vault to Vault?

Re pdybecks post, this can still be done by manually copying the vault project folders outside of PDM. This method is not supported by SolidWorks so care is required along with backup copies of evrything. Again ensure that all vault services are stopped during transfer and allow PDM to rebuild all trees etc on startup. Another way to do this may be through PDMWorks API.

Thanks very much for the replies.

At the moment I'm happy to transfer the whole vault from my C:\ to the new one on the server, but I want to be sure what files to copy from Vault to Vault without breaking any associativity between files.  If I copy the 'Vaultdata\projects' folder over will everything link in?  I'll try this as soon as I can get PDMW installed on the server properly.

With reference to your latter posts, yes it may come in handy to transfer single projects over in future, though for now I'll settle getting the whole thing to work!

Cheers,

Simon

Many thanks for everyone's posts.  For your information I've got this to work now by:

1) Stopping the PDMWServer service on the server
2) Creating new projects in the new vault (from VaultAdmin) with exactly the same names and descriptions as those in the 'old' vault
3) copying manually each project from the old 'VaultData\projects' folder to the new 'VaultData\projects' folder.
4) restarting the PDMWserver service.

Thankfully we didn't have much in the vault to start with, but it would be a bit labourious if there were hundreds of projects and sub-projects to copy over....
