How to get rid of mold spots on PFD

How to get rid of mold spots on PFD

How to get rid of mold spots on PFD

(OP)
This might be off topic a bit. sorry
I have a Mustang PFD that has mold spots on it. I bought it for work on the ship when winter comes and I wont care if it gets grease on it. Paid $5 for it.
It has mold spots on it and I was wondering if there is a way to get rid of them. Tried typical washing tonite. NOPE
Is there a orange dye I can put on it to hide the mold spots a bit. I think all the mold is dead and the black is just.....I dont know what the black would be? Dead mold?

RE: How to get rid of mold spots on PFD

It's probably pitting of the surface where the mold attached

RE: How to get rid of mold spots on PFD

Depending on the material of construction mold can be very destructive.  Also a moldy component will usually transfer mold to everything around it.  Moldy equipment in a confined space can be a hazard to yourself and others.

There are people that specialize in getting rid of mold but you have to be careful as the cost will probably be greater than an a new PFD.

If there is a Coast Guard group near you have them look at the PFD.  Most of the time they will take a moldy PFD out of service, if in their opinion the mold has affected the function of the device.

Personally I like a well functioning PFD as I have had to depend on one more times than I like to remember.  The last problem you want is worrying about a PFD while in the water, with sharks and things.

Try "Greased Lightening" available at HD type of stores.  Any mild Bleach cleaner will work well.  be sure to rinse the solution thoroughly upon completion
