Winch Drum Weld Design

Winch Drum Weld Design

Hi,
Does anyone know of any reference available that has a good description of weld designs for marine/offshore equipment? I'm using Blodgett's book to spec out weld sizes but I'd like to use other references as well. Thanks

RE: Winch Drum Weld Design

Hi,

I work in offshore industry as a Welding Engineer.
most of the time, Clients ask us to use following standards:

API RP 2A
DNV OS F-101
etc...

But those standards refer to AWS D1.1 ,ASME VIII (for tubing) or to some european standards.

Tell me which kind of structure it is and I'll tell you which one is the best.

Don't forget that standards are guidance for fabrication and there is often some addition to do.

If your real problem is weld size, then it is not a big issue.

For butt weld, you just have to think about the shape of the root and of the cap.

For fillet weld, you have to look at material thickness to choose the throat you need, and look at the minimum cap shape you need in term of fatigue and in terme of corrosion.

if you have some more informations, Ican probably help you.
