ASME B31.3 Applied to Pumps

ASME B31.3 Applied to Pumps

In designing an ASME B31.3 piping system, are pumps considered an unlisted component (since they do not have a standard listed in Table 326.1)?  As such would they have to have design calculations consistent with the design criteria of the code (i.e. section 304)?

I have a client who wants me to specify that my pumps are in compliance with B31.3, but I have never heard of this before.

RE: ASME B31.3 Applied to Pumps

No, pumps are not under the scope of B31.3 period. If you want a specific section to reference, see ASME B31.3, Section 300.1.3 and I quote;

... 300.1.3 Exclusions. This Code excludes the following:

d) pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors...

Fantastic.  Thanks for the help.  It didn't sound right, but I didn't think of the exclusion immediately and I am new to B31.3.

I am also going to assume that "other fluid handling or processing equipment" would apply to things like rotary valves, filters, and anything else under the sun that isn't pipe.

In line filters can be and are often designed to B31.3.

In-line filters make sense.  I can understand in-line components like filters, fittings, and valves, but I don't know how I could apply it to rotary valves, roll compactors or other things like that.
