Normalized plate for HX

Normalized plate for HX

Normalized plate for HX

(OP)
For a shell & tube HX (shell and channel made of SA-516-70), when is it a good idea to use normalized plate? What are code requirements? Does code require normalized plate in any situations? I know code has requirements on PWHT, what about normalization of plate material?

RE: Normalized plate for HX

If you review the ASME SA-516 specification, there are fabrication requirements for the plate material. Per section 5 (Heat Treatment) of this specification, plate thickness at or below 1.5" will typically be furnished in the as-rolled condition (they can be furnished in the normalized and tempered condition if specified on the PO OR if you require notch toughness testing). For plates greater than 1.5" in thickness, they will be supplied in the normalized condition.
