another animator question

another animator question

another animator question

(OP)
Hi all,

I'm trying to animate a drill bit cutting into a piece of material. i know that i have to animate a dummy piece to simulate the hole. But i cant get the bit to rotate and move down into the wood. Is there a way that this can be done? I tried to use animation wizard, and rotate the bit then move which looks great. But the problem is that it rotates the whole assembly when i insert my wood piece. I know that its just rotating the camera. It seem that i can only to one or the other, rotate of move. any tips? I thought about just moving the wood up to the bit, but it looks kind of dumb. thanks in advance!

RE: another animator question

Just a thought. .. is it possible your drill bit is fixed in the assembly?  You may want to hide your bit, add another drill bit to the assembly with a concentric and height mate, so it's able to rotate freely.  Try the animation using the new free-to-rotate bit and see if that works.

RE: another animator question

Jeff is correct on this.  You should be able to animate the bit rotating but if you have mates constraining the rotation it will not work.  You could use your original bit in the assembly and just suppress the mates for the animation.  You could also create a specific configuration for the animation with the mates suppressed.

hi,

I have no constraints on the bit at all. I had it fixed on the origin, but i let it float. if i move the bit down using animator, how can i get it to spin for a moment, then drop into the wood? I cant seem to add the rotation to the movement. thanks

RE: another animator question

I would remove the fixed relation.  I would then add a center line or axis to the assembly at the origin.  The center line or axis should extend in the same direction as the length of the drill bit.  Constrain the drill bit so when you drag it rotates around the axis or center line.  Add a key frame controling the bit at one position in time, spin the bit a few times and add another key frame at some point in the future.  This should cause the bit to spin during the animation.  I haven't done this for a while so you may have to do a few other steps to achieve desired results but this should get you started.

RE: another animator question

Fix hte Block and only place a Concentric Mate between the Hole and the drill.

Then step through the ANimation by moving the Time bar out then move the drill down a bit and the rotate it. Then Drag the time bar out further and repeat the process.

I just made a quick example and the only thing I had to do to make it look real was to drag each Key Point back to where they are closer together. This makes if more real looking.

I can send you my example if you shoot and email - See bottom of this page. - http://www.scottjbaugh.com/For%20Sale/For_Sale.htm

i dont havea fixed relation, i centered the dril on the origin when i dropped into the assembly, but let i set it to float. I'll try these suggestions.

Scott i'm sending you mail as i type this!

RE: another animator question

Just to let everyone know I made Mitsu50 2 AVI files one showing him how to make an animation and the second one was the result.

His response to this issue was understood by my examples. I have not posted these online yet. But they are similiar to the one I already have in the FAQ's here - FAQ559-1118
