Hi,

Could anybody give me some advise/references about the most common used welding processes within the Piping Industry?
Main piping materials used within our industry are A106-B, A333-6, A312-tp316(L) and Duplex UNS S31803 in thin and thicker wall execution.

Reason is that I want to learn and understand more about the welding techniques used in relation with quality. Are any literature and/or internet sites known, giving some educational info?

Any advise will be more than welcome.

The selection of a welding process depends on productivity and cost both in the field and in the shop. These are important variables that are dependent on pipe size (OD and wall thickness).

In general, the most common process for butt welding of pipe spools in the field is the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) process. If the pipe is to be radiographed (X-rayed), in some cases two welding processes are used - the gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) for the weld root and the remainder of the weld is completed with SMAW.

For shop fabrication of pipe spools, flux core arc welding (FCAW) with gas shielding or submerged arc welding (SAW) are typically used on heavier wall sections and/or large diameter sections. The FCAW and SAW are processes that have increased weld deposition rates.

If you want to learn more about the welding processes mentioned above, I would Goggle each of the welding processes. There is a lot of information on the internet.
