Measuring instruments Communication protocol

Measuring instruments Communication protocol

(OP)
Hi there,

I have being task to implement remote billing for couple sites which are scattered across the country (South Africa). I have a bit of a challenge, the about to be contracted vendor to build the interface between the instruments and the program to issue the invoices says they would like to work with instruments which have the IEC communication protocol. Does any one know about this IEC communication protocol and its advantages?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Measuring instruments Communication protocol

g'day to you

there are several iec protocol, named in short iec 101,103, 104 - latest is iec61850.

IEC 61850 is working over TCP/IP (same for 104).
From my point of view main advantage is it is IEC standard, that "should" make interoperability easier.

RE: Measuring instruments Communication protocol

South Africa make use of the IEC-standards, thus to use a IEC protocol would just be a logical choice.

Like ZapSib said, it would be most probably IEC61850.
