Model section produces invalid bodies

Model section produces invalid bodies

Model section produces invalid bodies

(OP)
I have an assy that I need to section, when I try and create the section at a prescribed location I get the error that a section at that location will produce invalid solid bodies.  I have also found the same thing when I tried to create a section veiw in a drawing I get an unusual section view, ( same assy, same location).  If I move in one direction or the other a little, the problem goes away.

Any ideas?

RE: Model section produces invalid bodies

I get this when dealing with imported bodies that require repair for bad faces or edges.  Are you dealing with imported bodies?

Another potential source of trouble is a complex edge (such as a cut edge of a lofted face) right on the section line.

RE: Model section produces invalid bodies

I have had this several times & have not found what causes it. No imported bodies were involved in my assemblies.
As you have found, simply offsetting the section line a tiny amount (say .001" or less) will allow creation of the section view.

RE: Model section produces invalid bodies

I have seen this happen with bad geometry that was made by the user (doesn't have to be imported). Offsetting it by .001 is the way aroudn the issue.

Send this into your VAR, maybe you have the model that will determine the error and get it fixed.

RE: Model section produces invalid bodies

I'm a Solid Edge user (amongst other systems) but some of the hints and comments on this forum are applicable to many systems, and I've seen something similar to this 'feature' before.
Is it a revolved feature ?
I've come across this when the section passes through the start/end of the revolve.

RE: Model section produces invalid bodies

I'd guess you have a surface or a point of a surface interacting at exactly the plane created by the section line.  As a result, SolidWorks doesn't know what to do with that point or coincident surface or part of a surface.

For instance, the end of a loft that is created with a point for a  section would be a problem if the section cut through the same plane the point was placed in creating the loft.  (How can you section and display a point?)

I want revive this issue if I might, we are seeing problems opening drawings we know were good when saved in SW2004, that are producing bad sections when openend in SW2005 is there some issue with this.  Originally I thought the problem was with the models and section I was trying to cut but we are seeing this on several different drawings (some with nothing in common).

RE: Model section produces invalid bodies

It could have been there was a problem in SW04 and it allowed this to work, but was fixed in SW05 and is showing the correct result.

Not sure what else to tell you there isn't enough info to help you with this problem further.
