Bending

Bending

(OP)
Can someone please help me with the following problem. I need to bend a 1/8 dia x 7.2in long solid 303ss rod into a 5in radius x 75 deg with a .75in straight section at the end. I was thinking about clamping the .75 straight section and proceed to roller bend it on a radius anvil. I'm not really sure what the radius has to be to accomplish the final dimensions. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

RE: Bending

Thin rod and big radius will probably have a lot of spring back even with 303.  You will also get variation in spring from mill run to mill run.

Since it does not sound like there are a lot of these I would make a soft test die and turn it to required size.

If it were high volume I would buy the wire in bulk spools and use an adjustable type rollers bender.

RE: Bending

Creech,
Two possibilities:
First, if you were to roll a length (10 feet) of rod and cut to the length you need, will the remaining arc cause a problem for form, fit or finish? From your description, I forsee a problem in knowing which is supposed to be the straight end.
Second option might be to roll a length, cut to length and straighten one end.
Either of these methods may be more repeatable than messing with short pieces.
Been there.
