Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

(OP)
On my computer (SW2005 SP4.0, Win XP Pro) I can drag a picture from an Explorer folder (jpg for example) and drop it in a drawing, and it appears perfectly.

On some other users' systems (same SW version, same OS), if they drag and drop a picture they get an empty rectangle with the file name in it.  We can't figure out any way to get the picture to appear on their system.

Any ideas on why this is so?  I'm stumped.

Thanks,

Brian

RE: Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

You have to physically go into the windows explorer and find the application that you want to associate to the file.

Example *.jpg

1) Open Windows Explorer
2) Tools\Folder options\File types
3) Find "MS Paint.exe"
4) This will associate the file to an application and it should be viewed in SW correctly after that.

Otherwise, you have Display as Icon checkmarked.

RE: Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

I have never been able to drag-n-drop and get the picture, only icons appears. I have the .bmp, .jpg, etc. extensions associated with MS PAint and still not. Even "Insert Object" in SW with the Displays as Icon unchecked gives me the icon, always has...

If you manage to fix this PLEASE post here!

RE: Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

Did you manually go an pick it through the path I posted above? I know that when you install the app it automatically associatate it, but even still you need to re-associate it with the direct *.exe and don't let windows assume the app.

Also don't pick it from the shortcut that is available... go browse for hte *.exe.

RE: Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

This is my step by step:
Open Windows Explorer
Tools...Folder Options
"File Types"
Highlight BMP, Click "Change"
Click "Other"
Browse to "C:\WINNT\System32\MSPAINT.exe"
Click "Open"
Click "OK"
Click "Close"
Reboot PC
I drag and drop from Explorer to open SW drawing and the Icon appears...

SW identifys this as a "Package()" when I delete it, is that not right?

RE: Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

Don't drag and drop - try Insert\Object from file.

RE: Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

"Insert\Object" has identical results for me.

RE: Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

Did this issue ever get answered.

We are experiencing the identical problem and have tried everything suggested above.

My gut feeling is this is not a SW issue but rather an operating system issue for the most part.

We have 3 older Gateways and 5 new Dells.  The pictures insert fine on the Gateways but do not on the Dells?  Coincidence?  I know it sounds crazy but it makes me wonder.

The Gateways are running XP service pack 1 and the Dells are running service pack 2.

We're going to load SP5.0 next week to see if that fixes the issue but I wondered if anyone else found a solution to this problem until we do the upgrade.

Don't ask me why we don't upgrade to SW2006 latest SP.  It has something to do with upper management deciding to micromanage company software.

I think he did try the previous suggestions--as I have, and nothing works.  I'm almost certain that it is an operating system thing, and someday I plan to figure it out.

RE: Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

Yep.  I have followed all your suggestions and a few of my own with no success.  Maybe the SW-SP5.0 accounts for the operating system SP1 to SP2  I'll find out next week.

I called our tech support and they have seen this before but had no immediate solution.  They would like me to update of course before they offer much help with the issue since the update is likely to fix it.

RE: Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

One more discover about this.

If I insert a picture to a drawing from the Gateway computer and save it - then open the drawing from the Dell computer, the picture opens fine.  I just can't insert the picture from the Dell computer.  That seems odd.

RE: Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

It all about forcing windows to regocognize that particular file type by a certain program. Once you have don that, then SW will recognize the file and import it in as a picture and not as an Icon.

RE: Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

Both computers are set to open the jpg file to the windows picture and fax viewer.  The Gateway works and the Dell does not.

RE: Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

Try another application like MS paint.

It's easier said than done.. I changed application references to and from different programs, and deleted references with no luck.  I had one computer that worked and one that didn't, and both used the same picture application.

RE: Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

Yeah..  Thanks!

Brian - What SW version and SP are you using?  I am on SW2005 SP4.0. We will load SP5.0 next week.  I'll let you know if that fixes it.

RE: Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

I also have the same problem as the others. I have only ever been able to insert or drag BMP format files onto a drawing sheet.

I have tried every setting & method mentioned in this and other threads on the topic. None of them worked for me. I have also tried this on several different computers, OSs & SW versions without success.

Luckily I have never really needed that functionality, but would like to know what is causing the problem for some & not for others. Hopefully someone will one day find out & post here.

cheers

I'm on 2006 SP2.0, and it's no different than 2005 was.

RE: Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

That's because it's a windwos issue. A SP will not fix it nor wil a change in versions.

RE: Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

I have worked with this issue several times.  I have had the most success with using MS picture editor as the app for .JPG files.  This does not automatically install with the MS package however.  If it is not installed modify your MS office install through add/remove programs and select modify.  Select custom as the type of install and then select Picture Editor to be installed.  I have had success with this with MS office versions through 2000.  I have not had the same success with 2003.

RE: Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

Office 2003 is not supported by SW. It tells you on that piece of papaer that is sent with your CD's. If the package is not on the list, it's not supported.

RE: Drag and Drop picture files in drawings?

.bmp, .gif, and .jpg all drag-n-drop onto SW drawings here.  I use Irfanview as the default viewer for these file types.
