Inquiry?
Enquiry?
I never know.
You are all about to tell me, I'm sure.

RE: Inquiry?

My colleagues in the US all say and write inquiry.  In the UK we say and write enquiry.

We have an on-line system for managing client support requests.  The (English) guy who wrote it put in a nice "Settings" option to allow the US and UK teams to both use it without arguing about language quirks.  I have mine set to UK, so I have an "Enquiry List" currently shown on my browser.

RE: Inquiry?

Merriam Webster Online shows definitions for inquiry and labels enquiry as a variant of inquiry.

RE: Inquiry?

Ensure and insure are different

You ensure that something is done.

You insure against flood damage.

RE: Inquiry?

Indeed, but are often confused as being the same thing.

Hey Drej,
keep it in its thread!
That Ensure/Insure thread has left me more confused that I started!
In this thread the answers are encouraging so far, as it suggests I haven't been walking heavy footed over some gramatic rule with certain obscure variations in meaning behind the words, I've simply been having trouble with which side of the Atlantic I am, which is no surprise.

RE: Inquiry?

I was taught to spell it as Enquiry and was about 27 years old when foolishly I corrected the then formidable secretary who spelt it as Inquiry. Wow. - Enquiry - "Not a chance", she said. "You INquire IN to something". Thoroughly chastised I have written INquiry ever since.

RE: Inquiry?

I would more often ENquire ABOUT something

RE: Inquiry?

UK version has a nuance - Enquiry is just asking someone about something, whereas Inquiry is a more offical investigation, following a set procedure e.g. criminal inquiry.
