Machining of Pure Ni

Machining of Pure Ni

Machining of Pure Ni

(OP)
Hello All,

I have a pure Ni plate that is causing us some difficulty.  The plate is roughly .25 x 5 x 20 and is to be used as a sputtering target.  The plate was produced using a PIF'd (Pneumatic Isostatic forged) process.

Our machinists are complaining that the plate is growing as they machine it.  We have tried a range of inserts and different cooling conditions - with no better results.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you.

RE: Machining of Pure Ni

Think of machining wood or plastic, not metal.  This stuff is very soft and it will tear and smear like mad.

Corrosion, every where, all the time.
Manage it or it will manage you.

RE: Machining of Pure Ni

0.25" thick and a very soft metal will cause all sorts of problems. To circumvent this either try P?M compact with all your final details or invest cast the piece. You will be in a better shape perhaps.
