heat detectors for deluge spray and CO2 systems

heat detectors for deluge spray and CO2 systems

heat detectors for deluge spray and CO2 systems

(OP)

Hello everybody there.

We need to specify the type of detectors that should be used as initiating device for fire protection systems on a hydroelectric power house, we have two cases:

1. The activation of water NFPA 15 deluge systems that protects power transformers located outdoors, the deluge valve is actuated by electric release, controlled by an electronic panel, in general I´ve seen that conventional heat detectors are used as initiating devices, but I don´t really know what type of detectors are recomended for this aplication.

2. A CO2 total flooding system for the generators pits or  enclosures, I´ve seen that heat detectors are used but I would like also to know what type of detectors are recomended.

I´ve seen cases where heavy duty weather/Explosion proof heat detectors with dual action (fixed-temp and rate-of-rise) are used and other cases I´ve seen common heavy-duty, moisture proof fixed-temp detectors are used. So I don´t know what type detectors should be used, I don´t want to specify a costly detector if it isn´t really needed.

Also I´d appreciate if somebody can give more details on how to calculate the location and quantity of detectors needed or the temperature rating values for the outdoor transformer detector.

Thanks.

RE: heat detectors for deluge spray and CO2 systems

I would prefer conventional (not electronic) fixed temperature heat detectors wired direcly to a conventinoal zone ciruit of the CO2 control panel's smoke detectors zone(s).

This will provide a system which is least likely to create false alarms. You can monitor CO2 control panle's alarm/trouble contacts via a smart fire alarm system for notification but do not use smart detectors for CO2 (or any gaseous fire suppressions system)

RE: heat detectors for deluge spray and CO2 systems

david,

Are you aware that NFPA has a guideline that specifically addresses the Fire protection requirements of power plants ?

The guideline is NFPA-850, and it was based on an extensive, and well written EPRI report on the unique aspects of power plant fire protection.

Hope that this helps...

For question #1 have seen protectowire or equal used.
