Tubular Structure.

Tubular Structure.

Tubular Structure.

(OP)
I am investigating a concept for a large structure similar to a "hangman" type structure or an upside-down letter L. The base is secured to the ground and the "hangman" is replaced with a large load. The structure is to be made of 12 foot diameter steel tube. The corner of the structure will be a mitered.

Any suggestions where I can start looking for design literature?

Try Googling "American Petroleum Institute"+design+tubular+pipe+structures

Hollow Structural Section Connections and Trusses Design Guide by Jeff Packer is one of the best!

Also look at "Tubular Steel Structures - Theory and Design" by Troitsy.  You can probably get this from Lincoln Arc Welding. Also you might also look at AASHTO's "Standard Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs - ect", particurlary Sections 3 and 4.
