Gardner Impact Testing

Gardner Impact Testing

(OP)
My question is in regard to material testing, specifically Gardner Impact testing. I read ASTM D5420 (Gardner Impact) and it says that the results are in units of inch pounds. I have a document from a former vendor that states that the impact test on material furnished to us is in units of in-lb/mil. Can anyone explain this to me.

Thanks

RE: Gardner Impact Testing

I had never heard of a Gardner impact testing before this thread. I googled it and this is one of the sites I found and explains how the equipment works. I don't know what kind of comparison numbers you need but this info should help.

RE: Gardner Impact Testing

Spike,

Gardner impact testing measures the energy needed to cause fracture, therefore the units need to be in terms of energy.  Joules (J) are the preferred, SI notation for ASTM D 5420, with pound force-inch also being a unit of measure for energy.  in-lb/mil is not appropriate.

RE: Gardner Impact Testing

I suspect that the source that used in-lb/mil was testing thin sheet/film and was dividing the fracture energy by the sheet thickness in mils (one one-thousandths of an inch).

Cory
