Detail and Assembly Drawing Naming Convention

Detail and Assembly Drawing Naming Convention

Detail and Assembly Drawing Naming Convention

(OP)
Is there an ANSI standard that describes the proper way to name a part or assembly? I can't remember if it was a company specific guildline that I'm recalling or something ANSI put out. If it is in ANSI, would someone please post it here for me?

Thanks.

btw, it went something like this... A light fixture used in the engineering area would be called, "FIXTURE, LIGHT-ENGINEERING" and an assembly would be either an ASSY or ASSY OF, depending on whether or not it was inseperable or not. To give another example, a mounting fixture would be called, "FIXTURE, MOUNTING". Basically noun first, followed by a modifier (e.g. what kind of fixture?) followed by a dash and another modifier if neccessary. Any of this sound familiar to anyone?

RE: Detail and Assembly Drawing Naming Convention

ASME Y14.100-2000 Engineering Drawing Practices
Section 5, Drawing Titles

To paraphrase, titles should be brief, consist of a noun or noun phrase.  Modifiers can be used, either a word or phrase.  Don't use "or" or "for".

Some examples:
Preferred-
CIRCUIT CARD ASSEMBLY
PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD

Not Preferred-
ASSEMBLY, CIRCUIT CARD
BOARD, PRINTED CIRCUIT

It's best to purchase this standard from ASME.  Also see forum1103

MadMango is correct.
Also, don't name it what it's for, name it what it is.

Ok... I'm guessing it was a company specific guideline in that case. It seems to be the opposite of what the standard says.

I'll have to find a copy of that one.

Thanks.

RE: Detail and Assembly Drawing Naming Convention

For what its worth (and internal workflow reasons), we don't follow this naming convention.  We always start the title with ASSY, BLOCK, SWITCH, WLDT, etc, etc.  Nomenclature data is input into our PDM system as it appears on the drawings, and it just makes it easier to do Component Name searches when you don't know/remember the Part Number.

Then again we don't do business with the DOD or Aerospace or Automotive entities.
