Best Vessel Handbook?
Best Vessel Handbook?
(OP)
What is the most useful pressure vessel handbook? I'm not looking for something to explain the ASME Code, but more for design information on items not covered by the code- saddle supports, for example, or local loads, or leg supports, lifting lugs, standard practices, etc. In looking on Amazon and previous posts, I find a number available. Which one to buy? How up-to-date are they? I find:
Pressure Vessel Handbook by Eugene F. Megyesy
"Pressure Vessel Design Manual" by Dennis Moss.
the CASTI book series
"Pressure Vessel Design Handbook" by Henry H. Bednar
"Pressure Vessels" by R. Chuse and B Carson
"Theory and Design of Modern Pressure Vessels" by John Harvey
Guidebook for the Design of ASME Section VIII, Pressure Vessels by James R. Farr, Maan H. Jawad
Pressure Vessels: The ASME Code Simplified by Robert Chuse, Bryce Carson
Thanks for your input!

RE: Best Vessel Handbook?
All the books you quote are useful and contain valuable information. If I were to choose one over the others perhaps the Bednar book or the Megyesy one. But beware even these contain errors in some of the formulae. Also the Moss book has some sections not covered by the others. Best to buy one and build up a library over the years or perhaps borrow from a library.
Sorry not to opt for one but each has its own merits and does not cover "all" non-code items.

For just starting, I'd suggest Megyesy...like the 12th or 13th edition...don't remember.

1. Pressure Vessel Handbook by Eugene F. Megyesy
2. Pressure Vessel Design Handbook by Henry H. Bednar
3. Guidebook for the Design of ASME Section VIII, Pressure Vessels by James R. Farr, Maan H. Jawad
I found all the books very useful. Megyesy's book is very good for quick reference.

Brownell, I do not recall the title!!!
RE: Best Vessel Handbook?
I believe the book you are refering to is:
Brownell and Young, "Process Equipment Design", John Wiley and Sons, New York, 1968.
It is out of print now.....
It covers all types of process equipment including atmospheric tanks, pressure vessels, S&T heat exchangers, pumps etc

I'd suggest watching out in his wind and earthquake section and make sure you know if your local code is the same that he used; it's been changing a lot over the last few years.
