CV joints and friction

CV joints and friction

CV joints and friction

(OP)
I have new CV joints that I'm about to fit and they feel quite stiff without CV grease.  The first questions is: does this mean there will be added frictional losses?

Are there any tricks I could employ to decrease the friction such as disassembly of the CV joint and polish the ball bearings and other working surfaces to minimise drag?

RE: CV joints and friction

The fact that the joints are stiff means that you have good joints without excessive clearance between the balls and races. Frictional losses only come into play when you are turning, and you will have those even with a loose fitting joint. So no, don't disassemble them. Besides, some can't be disassembled, if they use a postitive retention circlip to hold the halfshaft to the joints.

RE: CV joints and friction

New CV's should be tight, even with grease. They will loosen up.
