Adhesive suggestion needed

Adhesive suggestion needed

Adhesive suggestion needed

(OP)
Hi all.

I need to spec. a decent adhesive for bonding a 0.050 x 12 x 12 (5052) alum. sheet to an (extremely expensive) aluminum honeycomb energy absorbing crush element.

The bond isn't carrying any real load across the interface, but it's useful for keeping the crush element in position.

Any ideas?

RE: Adhesive suggestion needed

what are your constraints/wants? so far anything from flour paste upwards would work.

Devcon "Metal Welder"
3M Acrylic adhesive tape

I agree with GregLocock.  Not knowing any more at this time than we do, I am thinking that chewing gum might work.

RE: Adhesive suggestion needed

Check with the honeycomb supplier, but I think that honeycomb requires a pretty good bond to the face plates in order to develop its full crush strength.

RE: Adhesive suggestion needed

I have used honeycomb extensively for years.  The stuff we use has an aluminum core bonded to aluminum skins.  The adhesive is heat cured at 300DegF or thereabouts and the skins have to be specially treated.  I have also used a few adhesives to bond aluminum to aluminum both in the shop and field with excellent results.  We used a PRC-Desoto "PR-1422" polysulfide based two part epoxy and also Devcon "Metal Welder" which is a methacrylate based epoxy.  Both have worked very well for us.  Neither is cheap.  Both are available in small quantities.  Both smell to high heaven and require good ventilation, PPE and handling techniques.

RE: Adhesive suggestion needed

I have used Fusor 2 part metal adhesives.  Commonly used to bond automotive sheet metals.  I have used it on aluminium many times, for high stress applications. Highly recommended.
