Heat annealing for colouring stainless steel

(OP)
I'm a sculptor and I have designed a large sculptural piece in stainless that will be in a coastal environment in New Zealand. I learned how to anneal years ago but now need to get some info on what specific gasses to use or annealing treatments I might need to learn to create the green blue pink and purple effect of Paua or Mother of Pearl shell on one surface of the metal. It's going to be quite thick so heat degredation of the overall structure should not create a problem.

You can also seek assistance from Nickel Development Institute www.nidi.org. They have expertise on use of stainless steel for architectural purposes.Hope it helps. Keep us informed too of your results

RE: Heat annealing for colouring stainless steel

The colors for oxygen at temp for stainless start with a light straw, as time or temp are increased this gets darker. The color gets to a bronze purple eventually. Usually temperature has more of an effect than time.

good luck.

You will need to seal this after tiniting it.  The oxide formed to tint will reduce corrosion resistance and lead to pitting and bleading of rust.
I have seen this happen to the heat tint along welds in structures on the coast.

Corrosion, every where, all the time.
Manage it or it will manage you.
