I want to put 2500 points on a sketch profile evenly spaced. The profile is closed. Thanks in advance!

RE: 2500 points on a sketch profile

You can put evenly spaced datum points on an edge (SW2005).  Perhaps extrude a surface from the sketch and use the surface edge to make datum points?

RE: 2500 points on a sketch profile

matt - could you give us a little more information about what you're trying to achieve.  Are these points in a file with XYZ data and you want to read them in or ?????

The machine that we are using requires points. I gave it a profile and that wasn't good enough. The machine operator wants 2500 sketch points around the profile.

This part is going to be wired.

thanks for the replies

and tick,

I don't know what a Datum point is unless your talking GD&T. Neither does the SW help file. I am running 2005 sp3 btw.

I do however know what a sketch point is.

RE: 2500 points on a sketch profile

Try looking in Help for "Curve Driven Pattern", but I think you'll have to make a solid model.  I don't think you can do this with sketch segments alone.

RE: 2500 points on a sketch profile

Is the sketch 2d. Are you using these points to control 3 axis cutting?

DWG editor may do what you are looking for. I dont use it much.

You could email the file to me. i can give you what you want with my CAM package. ryanjfoss@adelphia.net

RE: 2500 points on a sketch profile

What CAM package are you using to control this wire edm machine?  I've never run into this...that the post processor needs to have the points verse having real geometry.  The controler must be interpolating between the points to solve the curve geometry.  I would do some asking around your shop maybe somebody is telling you some bogus information or they don't know what they're doing.  We do mold design which requires 5-axis milling and wire EDM...and I've never came across this.

RE: 2500 points on a sketch profile

I do not know if this will be any help, but it may give an insight as to what is going on.
We have a CNC machine at work that we normally draw parts for in Solidworks, then use Camworks to generate a part file for the machine. This can be viewed in notepad and is a regular G-code file. When this is downloaded to the machine, the machine develops what we call a ready file (post processer) which if uploaded to notepad has hundreds of lines of code generating points at .01 increments in the x,y,and z planes. Are you sure someone has not asked you for one of these?

Ok,

Thanks for all the suggestions and offers to help. This forum has some of the best people on it.

We ended up sending it to unigraphics and ug put the points on it that the machine wanted. I am sure we might have had other options as mentioned but this one was the fastest and we all know time = money.

Thanks again!

Matt
