changing a part template

changing a part template

changing a part template

(OP)
Is it possible to change a parts template?  If so how.

Example a part was created with template that is set up in inches can one change it to a part template that uses metric.  This might not be a good example as I don't want to just change the units I want the whole template changed.

RE: changing a part template

Make the changes you want to a template, then do a Save As to the new template name, making sure you select the correct file type... ".prtdot"  I think, it has been a while since I've been able to work with SWKS.

RE: changing a part template

I believe what grunt58 wants is to change a bunch of properties / settings of an existing part.  He has a template that has all of these changes and wants to change the part's "template" to the new one.

As far as I know, you cannot change the template.  You may be able to create a macro that will change all the necessary settings to what you want.  This will make it easier to quickly change a bunch of parts paramenters.

Thanks but thats not what I'm looking to do.  I didn't explain it well.

We have parts that were made by a different divison in a inch part template.  I want to change it over to our mm part template.  There are differneces between the two templates other than the units.

I hope this is clearer as to what i want to do.

Thanks shaggy.  A macro is not worth making there is only a few parts.  Guess I'll hve to live with there template!

RE: changing a part template

I just tackled this, and couldn't find an easy way of doing it. A macro might work, but I didn't take the time to try that. I just opened each file, and had a list next to me with what needed changed.
My customer originally created this large assembly, and didn't use consistant templates, so properties were filled out differently on each file, etc... making it difficult to determine what they wanted where in their titleblocks and BOM's.
After going thru 100+ files, I've submitted this as an enhancement request.

Good idea submitting it David. I'm going to do that as well. It would be nice to freely be able to change a part temp. like one can do on a drawing.

It's more annoying than anything.  Our other division uses inch and has a different dim style. I'm sure we should be all on the same template but I'm not the boss.

RE: changing a part template

If you open the few parts up and change the Docuemtn properties to look like your MM tempaltes... then walla your parts are now using a different standards.

When you first make part it uses the tempalte you pick, that doesn't mean you can't change it after that.

RE: changing a part template

Scott,
Precisely... That's what I did. I just had to change 5-6 properties in each part file. It'd be nice to be able to create the proper template, then load each part file, and just change it to that template.

Scott,

I guess borrow was not a good choice of word. When we take parts we keep and maintain them on our server/database so it doesn't matter if I would change the part template.

I contacted our VAR and he agreed changing a part template would be a good enhancement request.

RE: changing a part template

I agree.  But, the part templates can set up more than just the doc properties.  Your planes and anything else can be set up in the templates.  It would have to be specific to the document properties, similar to the "set to default" buttons.  The templates are intended as the starting point, continuous changing of the part and assy templates will get you into those problems.  Make sure everyone is pulling from the same template directory.  Once you have them set, put them on the network, and "add" this directory to the template directory under Tools\Options\File Locations\Document templates.  Don't delete the default one, but make it second in the order tree.  Also make sure your company Part and Assy template have a different name then the default Part.slddot, it will keep people from accidentally overwritting it if they link up incorrectly (there's alot to it...).  Hope that helps.
