Difference between A and SA in materials callouts
Difference between A and SA in materials callouts
(OP)
We are a plastic-lined pipe and fittings manufacturer who supplies the CPI with process piping. Our applications does not require code (ASME Pressure Vessel) fabrication and stamp but occasionally, we will see a spec that calls out, for instance, SA-105 flanges and SA-53 Gr. B pipe or SA-106 Gr. B pipe. What is the difference between an A-105 callout and an SA-105 callout?

RE: Difference between A and SA in materials callouts
The A designator is for ASTM materials, the SA for ASME materials.

In the case of SA-106, it is identical to A-106 "except for editorial differences in 8.1, 13.4, and 24.1 and deletion of ASTM caveat 1.5."

RE: Difference between A and SA in materials callouts
To assure identity, the ASME Code committee elected to use a prefix S to denote that the material specification was reviewed and approved for ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel use. In some cases, material can meet both ASTM and ASME specifications. In other cases, ASTM materials are not acceptable for use in boiler or pressure vessel applications.
