Toriconical maximum apex angle?
Toriconical maximum apex angle?
(OP)
Hi
ASME VIII-1 UG-32 doesn't clarify what is the maximum apex angle of toriconical heads unde internal pressure.
Until what angle can I use UG-32(h) rules?
I think that the limit is 60 degree because UG-32(j). Am I right?
After the limit can I calculate toriconical head as a flat head?
Thanks,
Torsani

RE: Toriconical maximum apex angle?
Under section (g), alpha of 30 degrees or less falls under equation 4, otherwise use 1-5.
Under section (h), toriconical heads "may" be used when alpha is less than 30, and are "mandatory" when alpha exceeds 30 degrees.

In addition to 1-5(g), you may be assisted by Bednar's "Pressure Vessel Design Handbook": Membrane Stress Analysis of Vessel Shell Components - 3.7. Conical Heads (page 66÷69).
