Simple concrete design ACI 318
Simple concrete design ACI 318
(OP)
I hope this is a very simple question for most of you.
I’m based in the UK but we have a project in the Middle East, which will require us to use ACI 318M as the concrete design code. This looks like a very different document to our British Standard BS8110 and I’m having difficulty understanding where to begin!
Can anyone supply or direct me to an example of, say, a simple beam? I want to begin to familiarise myself with the code before job start.

I'm beginning to think that we may have to buy this book. From the PCA's description this seems to be the 'how to' document.
I was hoping that there would be something much simpler just to give an introduction...

The flexural requirements are based in large part on the assumption of using a rectangular stress block instead of a parabolic one. The design philosophy is LRFD.
Another good reference book is the new one by Macgregor and Wight, "Reinforced Concrete: Mechanics and Design."
RE: Simple concrete design ACI 318
1- Concrete strain in the compression be .003 rather than .0035 in BS.
2- Reinforced steel effect in the shear is ignored in ACI.
3-The Critical section in Punshing shear is d/2 from the face of the column rather than 1.5 d in BS.
4- ACI hasn't a modification factors for enhancing the deflection limits, but has a better approch for calculate it.
5-In general ACI has more details & modern theories.
By the way I'm working in the UAE too , and I wonder of ur question about ACI becouse almost all Firms here using BS standards (Except Katib&Alami as my knowledge )
any way this is a simple calculation for flexure
a=d-?{d^2-2M/(.85fc'?b)}
beta1=.85-.05*{(fc'-30)/7}
cb=.003Es/(.003Es+fy)*d
amax=.75*beta1*cb
for a< amax
As=M/{?*fy(d-a/2)}
? is the strength reduction factor = .9 in flexure
PCA is a great book as a refrence and for learning ,but for some thing more simple may be the Safe or Etabs Design manuals can be useful which have a simple steps and direct formulas for calculation.
my regards
Ahmed

ACI code is better than british code but more better than both is DIN german code which have more detail than other
