Tip for you impatient types

Tip for you impatient types

Tip for you impatient types

(OP)
I got used to waiting for my file to load before being able to do anything using another CAD program.
Well, after over a year on Solidworks, I accidently discovered you can zoom, pan and view a file as it's loading. I jusy got used to loading the file, and doing other things until it was fully loaded.
Maybe this is a new feature in 2005, or maybe it's been around forever. I don't know, but it's very handy when your customer calls, and asks a simple question, and you can load the file and can start looking without waiting. Especially helpfull on large assemblies.
Just thought I'd point this out to anyone else who might not know.

RE: Tip for you impatient types

I discovered this just because when I started using SW I tried to use the file as soon as the graphics appeared.  Not realizing I had to wait longer.

Another tip.  You can also work in another program while you're waiting.  At least since I went to SW 2005 SP3.0 I can.  I'll start a large assy opening and come here, check email, or something else for the few minutes it takes the file to load.

Yep, definately an impatient type. <G>

RE: Tip for you impatient types

By working in a different app you are taking Memory and CPU power away from SW while it's trying to open the file. This will cause it to take longer on opening, etc...

RE: Tip for you impatient types

Good point Scott.  Guess it's just me, but I get bored watching the hourglass symbol.  So, if it takes 3 minutes to open instead of 2, but I can respond to some emails, or something else instead I'm much happier.

Plus, I have 2 monitors, so I can have both applications open and see when SW's is done.  Slower as far as SW's is concerned, but no wasted time.

The new dual-core and 64-bit chips coming out help in this--true multi-tasking!

RE: Tip for you impatient types

I'm wondering when Solidworks is going to take advantage of multi-processors. It will be a huge performance advantage over all their competitors. Since we design and build cluster systems we keep pushing the issue that soildworks should have this capability.

Jon

RE: Tip for you impatient types

SW already takes advantage of Multi-threading, where it can. It's not fully multi-threaded yet, but there are areas that already use it.

RE: Tip for you impatient types

SW uses multi-threading when rendering in Photoworks, but not sure when else it is used.  It is noticeably faster.

RE: Tip for you impatient types

2006 added a background rebuild process for large assembly drawings. Basically the views open in lightweight draft mode and rebuild in the background, allowing you to detail the drawing while it's loading.

Yep, I saw that at our user group meeting. 2006 definately has some enhancements I will use.
I just thougt it was funny I never noticed this before. I just happened to scroll my mouse button, and it zoomed in while the file was still loading all of the components.

RE: Tip for you impatient types

It's using the same data that the viewer uses. I have seen some files in the past not do it. Maybe the display data wasn't saved in those cases for some reason.

RE: Tip for you impatient types

That zoom-or-rotate-before-fully-loading feature also works in SW04 & if I remember correctly did so in SW03.

Well, as the guy who always calls into the Mr. Obvious show always says... "Huh... I never made the connection!"
