Roadway / Utility Usefiul Life

(OP)
Does anyone have any information (with source) on the useful life of roadway and utility systems (one source I found has road useful life as 20 years for example).

RE: Roadway / Utility Usefiul Life

I generally use 20 years for asphalt and 30 years for concrete; but it depends on the climate, quality of aggregate, type and volume of traffic, etc.

RE: Roadway / Utility Usefiul Life

An interesting point was raised by a local council asset management engineer, it goes as follows:

- Engineers generally design for 20-30 year life,
- Asset Managers generally budget for 40-60 year life,
- Accountants look for 60+ years, as on paper they can show
savings in their term of office.

Design life as I understand it is the general time it takes for a road to deteriorate to the point where it needs to be reconstructed. Hence the longer the design life used to higher the initial standard of the road.

Therefore talk to the body you are designing the road for and ask them when they would like to do the next major construction on it and set that as the design life.
