Cantilever Deck

Cantilever Deck

Cantilever Deck

(OP)
Owner wants to replace the window on the second floor with a sliding door, where he is planning to put a cantilevered deck, which he can access through this sliding door.  Question is "is there any good source of plans for cantilered deck?  I am little confused about the cantilevered beam details what it should look like?  Any suggestions, please?  Thanks in advance...

RE: Cantilever Deck

how long is the deck cantilevered?

depending on the length, I usually sister the deck joists to the floor joists and cantilever the deck joists with out a beam.

RE: Cantilever Deck

The wood framing rule of thumb, is to double the exposed joist length next to the house floof joist. IE 6 foot deck, 18' joist, 12' attached to the floor frame.

checking the usual bending, shear, nailing....

RE: Cantilever Deck

Then there is the other controversy if you are engineering the "cantilevered deck".  A cantilevered deck (no posts to ground)is also defined as a balcony in most codes and has a minimum live load design requirement of 60 psf rather than 40 psf.

RE: Cantilever Deck

Flashing details should be provided to prevent water intusion.

SRO,
It is a 5'wide deck running the whole width of the building, i.e, 28 feet.
