Looking for information on welding wire

Looking for information on welding wire

(OP)
I am looking for information about the difference between 309-15 and 309-16 stick wire. I have used the two wires on pipe welding in a 6G position and found that the 309-15 will run like a lo-hi rod but the 309-16 clumps up and drops out I am looking for a answer because most of the rod manufacters will tell you there is no difference

There are basic differences between the two covered SMAW electrodes. For the E309-16, this is a basic-rutile type coated electrode and can be used in either AC or DC mode. Very popular welding electrode and provides a stable arc.

For the E309-15, this is a lime fluorspar coated electrode. I believe that this covered electrode is only used in DC mode. The weld deposit is tough and is east to use for all-position work.

Use the AC mode with the E309-16, and see if this improves the situation. Is this new weld rod that was recently purchased or stuff that has been on the shelf, open stock?

Also, what are the base metals that you are joining?

The material is to carbon steel pipes with a 309 GTAW root, hot pass and filler pass (6") pipe the 309-15 is for the cap. This is for disimiliar piping we test out on for powerhouse work.

Metenger has a point. Do check if the electrode has deteriorated or something. My experience is E309-16 runs smoothly and generally has a better finish than E309-15, with good slag detachability.
