Check valve suitability

Check valve suitability

(OP)
Regarding the performance of check valves on raw water pipelines, various options exist.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the most common types: roller ball, swing, membrane, and spring disk? (I am not considering using control valves in my application)

I am considerng using a stainless steel spring disk type in a minewater application (12" diameter, with 10" valves) Anything I should look out for?

RE: Check valve suitability

You may want to check out www.noreva.de
These nozzle type check valves are used worldwide in any kind of raw water applications (mining, water wells, submersible pumps, etc).
They have three main advantages: Very low pressure losses due to venturi shaped design, non-slaming without any damping devices due th short valve disc stroke and maintenance free for several years due to the use of metallic items only.
They are available in any kind of material.
Ball, swing, membrane and spring disc cover high risc of slamming, create high pressure losses and need to be maintened regulary.
Send the flow data to hgustorf@noreva.de for a proposal.

RE: Check valve suitability

You may wish to refer to Fluid transients in Pipeline Systems by Rpof Thorley or Pumping Stations Design by Sanks.

There is also a paper at www.pipingdesign.com that covers surges in a piping system and the associated risks that may assist your understanding.
