Reformer Compressor Fouling

Reformer Compressor Fouling

Reformer Compressor Fouling

(OP)
We have a Delaval barrel type Recycle Gas compressor in our Reformer unit.Periodically the compressor becomes fouled with ammonia chlorides, which produces high rotor unbalance vibrations.Consequently, we have to take the compressor out of service and purge it to the atmosphere.By purging I mean, we remove the suction/discharge piping and inject small amount of water into the compressor while it is running. This dissolves the buildup enough to dislodge it from the rotor. We purge the compressor until the vibrations lower to an acceptable level. Essentially we are cleaning the rotor of chlorides. Is anyone privy to online compressor washing techniques with regards to this service?
TIA

RE: Reformer Compressor Fouling

You could consider:
1) Online / continuous water washing, at some point upstream the separator drum. Select a point not too hot. Water must be decanted at the drum.
2) During shutdowns, a thorough water washing of heat exchangers and lines.
3) Installing a filter at compressors suction (cartridge type).
On the other hand, you should review your Hydrofiner operation. NH3 should be removed from naphtha feed, at deep enough hydrotreating.
