Specify drawing section view cut depth?

Specify drawing section view cut depth?

Specify drawing section view cut depth?

(OP)
In Inventor you can easily specify the depth of a section view in a drawing by dimension, (a parallel offset distance from the cut line beyond which all detail is omitted). After limiting your section cut depth all projected or iso views from the section view only reflect that depth of cut. Is there an equivalent way to do this in SW 2005?

For example if you have a 36" dia x 100 ft tall process column and you want to cut a full section view in an assembly drawing across the 36" dia to show internals for a depth of 2' only from the section cut line. One very cumbersome work around in SW in a large assembly is to begin to use properties/hide components. Displaying only the surface cut does not provide the necessary detail.

RE: Specify drawing section view cut depth?

This is a new feature for SW06 only.

Have subscription service so glad to hear this. This is a very significant time saver for the type and number of sections we utilize.

RE: Specify drawing section view cut depth?

A workaround for SW05 might be to create an assembly configuration whith an "assembly cut". The cut should remove the portion you do not want to see in the drawing section view.

A view of the cutaway config could then be called into the drawing & used to make the section.

Will a broken out section do what you want?

RE: Specify drawing section view cut depth?

A "broken out" section cuts away "material" to  a specified depth, & shows  everything beyond that depth.

The SW06 section view can set a depth from  the section line effectively taking a slice of the part/assy & does not show  anything beyond.

RE: Specify drawing section view cut depth?

One workaround that I use heavily to accomplish the task the original poster requested is to do a section view and then crop that newly created view.  This way I am only showing the area that I specifically need.
