High Flash Point hydraulic oil

(OP)
I am looking for a high flash point hydrualic fluid that is "user friendly" (ie, easily handled and noncorrosive). The fluid is used to actuate the hydraulic actuator on a valve in a piping system. The system piping is 900F and the fear is that if the oil contacts the hot surface or creates a mist/fog due to a leak, a fire or explosion can result. I am looking for a fluid with a flashpoint over 900F.  I am not well educated in the field of tribology and am not familar with the various hydrualic fluids on the market. Any suggestions?

RE: High Flash Point hydraulic oil

This is a good place to start. They do not supply fluids but have a good knowledge about all types.

Search for the Factory Mutual tests info. One is ignition of a spray by a flame, the other is spray onto a hot surface as you describe.

In our experience, fluids that pass and look good on the videos may not act the same way in real life.

FM tests were under revision to a method of rating flame resistance by the amount of energy release. I don't know the status.

900F is veryhigh flash point. I think you will end up with phosphate ester (nasty), or water glycol. I don't think any of the polyol esters or other syntetics will do what you need. Certainly not petroleum oils.

Search by the steel mills applications also, rolling billets, etc.

We ended up with high performance water glycols, Citgo FR5046HP.

RE: High Flash Point hydraulic oil

You could look at something like the Skydrol products, probably MCS2361 since you aren't flying and won't want to pay for aviation-grade material. I encountered it at a previous employer where very high temperature rating was needed - I had to look up some old docs to find the name. As kcj says, the phosphate esters are quite aggressive chemicals. Our cabling on the job faired pretty badly - we ended up using EPR and PTFE sheathed cables if I remember correctly: the fluid attacked everything else we tried. Horrible material.
