Steel Flywheel

(OP)
I'm having a custom flywheel machined, and I wanted to know what heat treat specs you all think I should be shooting for.  It'l be made of 4140, unless anyone can give me a reason I should step up and use 4340 ($).  I'm thinking I want a through heat treat, on the order of rc45, comments, suggestions?

crossposting is bad mmmmkay?

RE: Steel Flywheel

Just tell the heat treater how hard you want it and they will do the rest. But don't make it too hard. If you are going to finish machine it after heat treating (it could distort) then 45 HRC could be pretty difficult to machine. Unless you really need super strength, hardness down in the 30s might be better. I don't know what kind of wearing surface steel will provide for a clutch, as compared to gray cast iron.
