Where would you like to be?

Where would you like to be?

Where would you like to be?

(OP)
If you had nothing tying you down and could move anywhere in the United States to work, where do you think you would like to live/work?

I've seen some lists of the "Top 10 Places to Live in America" and things of that nature, but I wanted to see some opinions from people actually living in various areas across the country/world.

RE: Where would you like to be?

Apart from living on a cruise ship 24-7, I really liked Barstow, CA.

RE: Where would you like to be?

Once while I was on vacation with the family, I found my dream job. Here it is ....

Working each day on the beach (East or West coast), handing out towels and making sure the cabana chairs and umbrellas are all out and ready for use. The person that I saw having this job would show up promptly at 8 AM with coffee in tow and a paper every day. After spending about 15 minutes setting up, he sat in a cool tent and made sure the beach customers were set. My gosh, talk about the scenery day in and day out in handing out towels. This guy was in his 50's, tanned, had no stress from work and enjoyed BS'ing with the hotel guests each day.  He was done by 3 PM.

RE: Where would you like to be?

Anywhere in Florida, within 30 miles of the coast.

RE: Where would you like to be?

I currently live & work 1 hour outside New York City. I like my current location during the week but would love to have a small modern apartment in the City that I could crash at when I go out on the weekends.

RE: Where would you like to be?

I really like Bend, Oregon it reminds my of Lake Tahoe without all the people.  I also like Gold Beach, Oregon because it reminds me of Santa Cruz again without the over population.  But I guess Sacramento will do for now until it gets smoggy like L.A.

RE: Where would you like to be?

My first thought is I would choose Marin County, CA.  Most likely Sausalito.  The climate is moderate, not too hot in summer and not too cold in winter and as I also like the vibrant atmosphere of a big city when I feel like it, San Francisco is just across the bridge.

In my travels, I have seen many beautiful areas…..West Virginia, Tennessee, Colorado just to name a few but I think Marin would win out.

RE: Where would you like to be?

Another thing I forgot to mention is I could go and watch casseopeia dance

RE: Where would you like to be?

How about the US Virgin Islands?  Or Alaska?

RE: Where would you like to be?

I would live only in San Francisco. Nothing can compete to this. Yes, it is expensive, but the life surrounded by SF beauty and spirit worth everything.

RE: Where would you like to be?

I'd love to be a garbage man in St. Thomas or St. John of the US Virgin Islands.  Work would be completed by 10am (maybe), then I could get in 3-4 dives a day.

RE: Where would you like to be?

MadMango;
Did you mean a sanitation engineer?

RE: Where would you like to be?

Live within a few miles off the coast of San Diego, California upon retirement

RE: Where would you like to be?

Haggis,

Just saw your post (while I was wasting valuable company time and not doing my job).

Sausalito is nice but really crowded with busloads of tourists in summer. That's probably the major complaint I hear from prople who live there.  If you like it cool, it's the place to be.  It can be 20-25 degrees (Fahrenheit) cooler than central Marin (Novato or San Rafael.)

And if you lived there, you could watch me dance tonight at the San Rafael Farmer's Market!  and on July 23rd, at the Scottish Rite Temple in Oakland.

I went home at lunch to put on my performance make-up for tonight because I have only 20 minutes to run home at the end of the day to change into costume....been taking grief all afternoon at the office.

"If you are going to walk on thin ice, you might as well dance!"

RE: Where would you like to be?

Casseopeia,

I would have to agree with you on that one......the SF bay area and north bay is loaded with tourists in the summer months.  I'd much rather live in Piedmont and work in Berkeley.

RE: Where would you like to be?

Naples FLorida, it is getting expensive but the beach and the sun are incredible.

RE: Where would you like to be?

Berlin, Germany!!!

RE: Where would you like to be?

I really enjoyed living in the Chicago area.  None of those nasty hurricane things and close enough to a big lake to prevent the tornados too.  It's also a great and exciting city.  The only real downside for me was the lack of any kind of hills or other land relief.

RE: Where would you like to be?

Just about any of the Hawaiian Islands come to mind.  Though I have to admit my current location is not too bad.  Lake Michigan close by, 4 true seasons (though winter can get a bit long), and the ability to escape to the wilds is nice.

Regards,

RE: Where would you like to be?

I grew up in Albuquerque NM. That was a wonderful place to live. Excellent climate, beautiful scenery I really wish I could move back.

Berlin is a great place, but a little harsh in the winter. Knoxij did say US, but if we're expanding to the rest of the world:

Barcelona Spain, Cassis France, Brisbane Australia, and Perth Australia, all places that when I left I thought, wow that would be a great place to live.

RE: Where would you like to be?

I'd buy me a big RV and just move around and see the off-roading parks (with trail rig in tow) and historical sites in the US.  I'd work, if I still had to via laptop, in my remote office.

If I had to pick a place to live it would be Moab, UT in the spring/summer and Tellico Plains, TN/Murphy, NC in the fall/winter and just wheel year round! ;)

RE: Where would you like to be?

I need to find a place that is kinder to arthritis. This changing between hot and humid, cold and damp, and gloomy rainy days is starting to do me in. Maybe Arizona or New Mexico?

RE: Where would you like to be?

I really don't have an answer to that question.  There is so much to see in the world!  So many wonderful places to visit.  I know I've not lived and travelled enough to pick just one place.

I guess I'm just glad to have my family and friends, so anywhere they are if fine by me.  I don't mind being tied down, as long as I still get to do some travelling to see all those wonderful places.  I'll have to add some from this thread to my list of places to visit.

Of the places I have been:
One place I love to visit is Crater Lake, Oregon.  It is BEAUTIFUL, and so peaceful.  Other favorites are a view of Salt Lake from the moutains in Utah, the rural areas of France, view of the mountains from the plains in Colorado, and DC when the cherry trees are blooming.

If you hear someone cheering you on with a thick Scottish brogue, you'll know who it is.

metengr

If St. Thomas or the US Virgin Islands has the same legislation as Texas, MadMango would happily settle for "garbage man"

RE: Where would you like to be?

In reverse order:

One of the Hawaiian islands. We had our honeymoon there last year.

The far north-west of Scotland. Torridon; Knoydart; Letterewe: you can trek for days and never see another human. Stunningly beautiful in winter.

Newcastle-on-Tyne. To a Geordie boy, everywhere else you live is just somewhere you're visiting on your way back home.

RE: Where would you like to be?

I don't know, haven't been to too many places. Maybe outskirts of SF, CA.

RE: Where would you like to be?

Well, paying $20 to 50/month more on hurricane insurance seems  a good deal for the previlege of living in paradise. If you are not a home owner or comply with new building codes there is nothing to worry about. Depending on the region of Florida you live in you maybe face a hurricane one day in a decade.

RE: Where would you like to be?

I've lived on both coasts (6 cities on the west coast), and a bunch of places in between.  I've worked all over the world.  I retired to the Four Corners area on purpose.  The mountains are incredible.  The elevation is high enough to have mild summers and the latitude is low enough to have mild winters.  No hurricanes.  No tornado's.  No earthquakes (in the last few centuries).  Dry air is good for old bones.

RE: Where would you like to be?

Iceland
Faroe Islands

Germany is nice, too.

In the US, paradise seems to be in the High Desert Country.

RE: Where would you like to be?

Hey Vooter, what was it about Barstow? I visted friends there many times (I'm from the UK) but can't quite understand why you would pick there -  The desert is glorious round Joshua Tree though.

The Auvergne or Park Morvan regions of France take some beating as do the food and wine.

And Newcastle on Tyne. Yes. Perhaps one of the greatest phoenix from the flame stories in the UK. What a place.

Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina
In the morning
No one could be sweeter than my sweetie when I meet her
In the morning
Where the morning glories twine around the door
Whispering pretty stories I long to hear once more
Strolling with my girlie where the dew is pearly early
In the morning
Butterflies all flutter up and kiss each little buttercup
at dawning
If I had Aladdin's lamp for only a day
I'd make a wish and here's what I'd say
Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina
In the morning!

RE: Where would you like to be?

Hey Andyenergy,

What brought you up to Geordieland?

I'm marooned in Teesside, living among the Smogmonsters*, but it sure beats living in London. Just waiting for a power plant to be built within commuting distance of Newcastle and I'm outta here!

* There is a huge rivalry between the inhabitants of the City of Newcastle and the two towns of Sunderland and Middlesbrough. Geordies from Newcastle, Makems from Sunderland, and Smoggies from Middlesbrough. In case anyone was wondering!

RE: Where would you like to be?

andyenergy, Barstow had weather that appealed to me, decent views, much, much cheaper and less pretentious than New York city (where I live). And there's this night club called, I think it was... darn! Can't remember the name! Anyway, premium beers at $2.75 each - on a Friday in April 2005 yet - and excellent "talent" on the dancefloor. Close enough to the coast for beach excursions, etc.

RE: Where would you like to be?

Well yes I would like to move to SF more than any other place in the US, if I were not tied down by... southern France!!!

RE: Where would you like to be?

One of our research scientists told me a story about a vacation he took that sounded very similar to metengr's experience. There was a fellow who worked independently selling drinks on the beach. He would make them in cocunut shells, and sell them for $5.00 each. After watching him for an hour or so, the research scientist realized that since this fellow worked in a cash-only business, if he reported no income tax then he actually cleared about the same amount as the scientist did. But this fellow also had an ideal environment with incredible scenery, very low stress, and no deadlines to meet. Ah, that sounds like a work environment that I could get used to!

RE: Where would you like to be?

The San Francisco or Monterey Bay areas in California would be first choice and I guess Denver area would be second choice.

RE: Where would you like to be?

Vooter - wouldn't have been rudy's would it? I rememer Katz on Main street and the Chilli Bowl. One of the reasons i ended up in barstow was because its mentioned in the first line of Fear and loathing in Las Vegas. I always found West side US amazing - PCH1, Arizona and Utah are just incredible. Never been east side of the US - have been concentrating on France recently.

ScottyUK - I came from and lived in yorkshire more than 20 years ago, my girfriend at the time got a job in Newcastle and I visited often. More recently I'm living in the South West but often travel to visit companies doing work for our stations in either Gateshead or Sunderland. Always stay on the Quayside when |I can and have even been for weekend breaks there. Very friendly people, always up for a party, and I love the accent.

Andy

RE: Where would you like to be?

vooter and andyenergy

Barstow is'nt too bad a town and some of the residents are incredible.....I believe that's where ALF lived with Willie and Kate.

RE: Where would you like to be?

Aha! It was, in fact, Rudy's! Great DJ, clean place, roomy, comfortable, awesome "local talent."

...and it's on the way to Las Vegas, yes indeed...

...and it's where Route 66 Starts/Ends and there's even a "Route 66" Museum!

RE: Where would you like to be?

Carification:  the mother road 66 starts in Chicago and ends in Santa Monica.

RE: Where would you like to be?

Correct!

It's because the song about getting one's kicks on Route 66 mentions Barstow by name that they have a museum.

RE: Where would you like to be?

Does anyone remember the TV show "Route 66" with Martin Milner, George Maharis and Glenn Corbett?  And that fantastic Corvette('58 I believe). Years later I drove the whole thing from Chicago to L.A. but cheaated a little on the Interstate because of road repairs.

RE: Where would you like to be?

Don't forget Winona

RE: Where would you like to be?

Camden, NJ, no contest.  Recently voted the most dangerous city in America.  The variety of crime and governmental corruption is absolutely breathtaking.  Combined with the traffic nightmare resulting from the intersections of I-96, I-76, the NJ turnpike and related offshoots make this part of the world the perfect comparator for other places.
Regards,
RLS

RE: Where would you like to be?

Lovely Camden NJ! You forgot that their brag to fame is the fact that they have the best heroine in the US! I recently had to work there for a couple of weeks, I really enjoyed the fact that there was no toll to enter but you had to pay a toll to leave. I guess Philly is trying to reduce migration

RE: Where would you like to be?

Foada,

There is a similar situation on the Severn crossing into Wales. Enter England for free, pay to get out. You figure it out...

RE: Where would you like to be?

Lostsailor:

No! Say it isn't so! We all think that Memphis, TN has the worst crime, the worst drivers, and the most corrupt politicians.

RE: Where would you like to be?

Let's remember that Camden, NJ is the home of the USS New Jersey, an engineering wonder.

RE: Where would you like to be?

For the USA: Willoughby Ohio!  For North America:  Vancouver British Columbia but, now, seriously, I would rather be/retire to Hua Hin Thailand or a small village in England (if I could afford it).
