Baseplate Design - Poles

Baseplate Design - Poles

Baseplate Design - Poles

(OP)
Hello,

I would like to know how to design a baseplate for a steel floodlighting pole. In particular, a baseplate that goes through the pole and is fillet welded top and bottom. How are the stresses transferred through the baseplate to the pole ? What effect does the hole in the baseplate have ?
References to any articles or text books would be greatly appreciated.
Regards.

RE: Baseplate Design - Poles

For the design of circumferemtial fillet welds you can refer to

Formulas for Stress, Strain and Structural Matrices
Pilkey
Wiley Interscience

I ported the procedure to Mathcad 2000 Pro as well, freely downloadable from the Collaboratory site.

A filled weld has specific formulations for any layout, sometimes simplified to 1 or 2 formulations. Of course if you may need gusset plates to have a less thick baseplate.
